Welcome to Chicago Ave. Garden!

This garden is on Dakota land. We honor with gratitude the original inhabitants of this land and those who have been caretakers of it throughout the generations as we work together to tend to creation on this site. We are animated by a vision of being in kinship with all of creation – people, water, soil, creatures, plants – and we are seeking to deepen our kinship through how we relate to land on this site and beyond as we seek healing and repair for ourselves and our broken world. As Martin Luther King said, we are all tied together in ‘a single garment of destiny.’

This garden is part of the 24th St. Urban Farms Coalition, a group of local organizations that works together to create and nurture the culture and practice of hyper-local food production, food sovereignty, healthy eating, healthy living and related activities. Members of the coalition include the Native American Community Development Institute, the Indian Health Board, the Native American Community Clinic, the Indigenous Peoples’ Task Force, Dream of Wild Health, UMN SNAP Education, Waite House, Ventura Village Neighborhood Association, and Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church.

Currently, this particular site is mostly tended by volunteers from Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, Ventura Village, and our farmer Melissa Trent who is on staff at Waite House. We are always looking for more volunteers as we seek to expand our circle of kinship in the neighborhood. All are welcome!
